Wooden gym floors are known for their classic charm and durability. However, to maintain their pristine appearance and functionality, proper care and maintenance are essential. In this article, we will explore the best practices for commercial wood floor maintenance, ensuring they stay clean, safe, and long-lasting.
The first step in preserving your gym floor is to prohibit the wearing of street shoes and the use of graphite. Sand and grit from outdoor shoes can cause significant damage. Graphite, commonly used in activities like pine wood derbies, should be kept away from gym floors to prevent scuffing and staining.
Install synthetic "walk-off" mats at entrances to trap dirt and debris from shoes before they reach the gym floor. These mats act as the first line of defense, reducing the risk of damage.
Regular dust mopping is crucial to keep your wood floor in excellent condition. After every two hours of use, dust mop the floor using a dedicated dust mop treated with Hillyard Super Hil-Tone. Make sure you always have at least two dust mops on hand – one for occupants and one for your use.
Treat your dust mop and let it sit overnight with the wicks hanging down before using it. For new or freshly laundered mops, use 1 oz. of Super Hil-Tone per foot of mop, while for used mops, use 1/2 oz. of solution per foot of mop. After dust mopping, shake free all dirt and grit clinging to the strands and pick it up with a whisk broom and dustpan. Place this mop in an area accessible to building occupants. Clean and treat the other mop that members were using and lock it in the custodial closet. Let it sit overnight before using. It is essential that the treated mop is stored out of reach of occupants, as it could damage the floor if the treatment has not had enough time to dry. Continue the process of rotating mops.
Never use disinfectant on gym floors, as it can remove the gloss and damage the wood.
Damp Mopping or Automatic Scrubber: To remove stubborn soils, spills, perspiration, and foreign matter from the floor, clean it weekly using a damp mop or an automatic scrubber with a solution of Hillyard Super Shine-All. Mix the Super Shine-All at the rate of two ounces per gallon of water and equip the automatic scrubber with a white pad. Ensure you clean the pad regularly to avoid spreading dirt.
Maintaining a commercial wood floor may seem like a challenge, but by following these practices, you can ensure that your gym floor remains in excellent condition. Preventing damage through protective measures and regular cleaning and treatment routines will help preserve the beauty and functionality of your wooden floor for years to come.
